Five Ways to Get More Out of Google+

We haven’t talked about Google+ for a while. In the past, we’ve touched on the importance of Google+ from an SEO perspective, but what about it being an actual tool for increasing exposure beyond the search engine?

Here are five things that can improve your Google+ visibility and leverage Google+ to bring more awareness to you or your writing.

1. Shling Bat schooner

If I would have labeled it Share Compelling Content, you would have skimmed right over this section. Let’s take this concept one step further and ask the question, “What is considered compelling and engaging content?”

Here’s a simple way to understand exactly what to write about. Go to your website or blog and look behind the back door at the stats. Check out where most of the comments hit and what page gets the most views. What post has the most interaction? That is your compelling content. That’s what people want to read about. Get that stuff out on Google+.

2. Create Hashtags (#)

“But this is not Twitter!” you scream. Many people don’t realize the same hashtag concept applies to Google+ as does to Twitter. So start using hashtags on all your updates on Google+.

3. Bring attention to other Google+ Users

Just like in Facebook or Twitter (@), you can bring attention to users of this platform by adding a (+) sign in front of the name of the person you want to tag. Up pops a list of the possible users, select the right one, and click—the user knows you’re talking about them.

4. Timing and Frequency

I know it’s tough to find the time to add another arm of marketing to your plan and often, we find ourselves Google+ing  a bunch of stuff at the same time. As of now, I do not know of a way to schedule updates like you can for Twitter and Facebook, but I have to imagine that it’s not too far off. Meanwhile, according to statistics, the optimal time to post on Google+ is between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. for the greatest visibility.

5. Link to your page

I know, you’ve heard it before, always include a link to wherever you want someone to go. You’ll be surprised how many times we forget that simple thing.

Follow these five steps and you’ll improve your organic lead/interest generation on Google+. How are you using Google+?

  1. Good stuff, Jim, thanks! I confess that I keep forgetting about Google+. I post links to my blog posts (because Blogger prompts me to do it…) and that’s about it. Must do better….

  2. Did you ever have a teacher in school whom you really respected so you wanted to do well in class, but the subject was just something you dreaded? For me, that’s Googleplus, but Mr. Devitt, I’ll try harder, I promise!
