Book Brief: The Boat Thief

The Boat Thief
by M.D. Lee
Genre: Middle school / Teen Adventure
Word count: 51,000

What was in the large canvas sack young Fisher saw the Police Chief and the Mayor heave into the trunk of an old Buick?

Whatever it was he saw, he shouldn’t have because now they’re after him.

He believes running away is the only choice to keep himself alive. There aren’t many ways for a kid to escape, but living in a coastal Maine town there are hundreds of islands in the vast open sea to go into hiding. Stealing a small sailboat and disappearing into the night, he does just that.

The Boat Thief is a boy’s sea adventure with the ocean testing Fisher Shoemaker every step of the way.

Mike, how did you come up with the title for your book? Does it have any special meaning?
I really hated the original title, Escape by Sea, and knew it just wasn’t right. I honestly don’t remember how I came up with the title, but I do remember sitting there in the chair not allowing myself to get up until I came up with something different.

Who was your favorite character and why?
Without a doubt, the drunkard Skinny Pete. It’s unfortunate, but I based him off a good friend of mine who I experienced many of the similar disappointments as one would when your friend has a weakness for the bottle.

Does your book have any underlying theme, message, or moral?
The simple message that growing up can be hard on many different levels. But most things usually happen for a reason and it always makes us stronger in the end.

What would/could a reader or reviewer say about this book that shows they “get” you as an author?
I don’t even think I get me as an author. I’m just a simple guy who has an imagination for making up stories. I really just want people to find the story entertaining and they look forward to turning each page.

Give us an excerpted quote from your favorite review of this book:
“…I was enthralled by the storytelling – from the viewpoint of the thirteen-year-old adventurer, it still delivered with enough punch that I could not wait to finish… A thoroughly enjoyable read for most any age.”
