John, how did you come up with the title for your book? Does it have any special meaning?
Every fire starts with a single spark. Sparks are also associated with romance, inspiration and anger. There’s the spark of life, the divine spark. These things are part of the questions we ask ourselves. It’s not a book about philosophy, but those questions are part of every good story.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Probably Eddy “the Ladle”. He’s tough, loyal, and smooth. He tells it like it is, and he’s got all the best one liners. And he’s a great cook. What’s not to like? In the movie I’d cast a younger (and taller) Danny DeVito to play him.
Does your book have any underlying theme, message, or moral?
I wanted to give a sense of what being a firefighter is really like. For example Hollywood shows towering walls of flame. It’s not like that inside a fire. The scariest part is that you’re blind. There is just smoke and heat, and the need to find whoever’s trapped.
What would/could a reader or reviewer say about this book that shows they “get” you as an author?
That they understand that firefighters are regular people, not two dimensional Hollywood heroes. Sometimes we’re privileged to experience the indescribable joy of saving a life. Sometimes we bear the unspeakable tragedy of watching it slip away. We’re ordinary people who sometimes have the opportunity to do extraordinary things.
