Television producer Charlie Trager spends his days working with beautiful women on a daytime talk show. Then he meets the show’s next guest, a handsome young politician with a bad case of nerves—and a secret that could turn both their lives upside down.

Laurie, how did you come up with the title for your book? Does it have any special meaning?
It came from a line in the story, and it seemed to fit. Charlie, with his affinity for good scotch and Frank Sinatra, wants to play the picture of cool, even though his mind is anything but after falling into a situation that completely unnerves him.

Who was your favorite character and why?
Charlie, of course! He’s charming, a loyal friend, has great empathy for people, and he can laugh at himself. Yet he’s still human. Even when I threw roadblocks at him, he never stayed down for long. I admire that about a character.

Does your book have any underlying theme, message, or moral?
Other than “love can hurt like hell,” I didn’t really have a theme when I wrote the story. I wanted to explore and better understand this complicated situation. Charlie and Adam appear “off camera” in one of my other books; I wanted to know how their friendship began.

What would/could a reader or reviewer say about this book that shows they “get” you as an author?
That the story flowed from the authenticity of the characters. That I handled the subject matter with respect. That the writing and characters drew them in and made them care, even though they might have had some initial qualms. And that they want me to get moving on the sequel!

Give us an excerpted quote from your favorite review of this book:
“Boris did everything right in The Picture of Cool. The pain Charlie feels as he pines for Adam is something that any person can relate to.”
