Anthems for Authors – Wrapped up in Books

This song, Wrapped up in Books, by Belle and Sebastian makes me want to put my smart librarian glasses on, get a bunch of college students, and film a video in a library. Each student could be reading a different book (since I’ve authored more than twenty at this point) and how cute would that be? I just need to find a band who could write a song and work my titles in and…oh well, never mind. That sounds like too much work. I’ll just sit back and enjoy their video instead.

Anthems for Authors – My Book

Wouldn’t it be kinda neat if, when someone asked you what your book was about, you could pick up a guitar and sing a song about it? Okay, maybe not. I’m not sure what The Beautiful South is doing here while performing My Book – what with those hats and all – and is that dude reading his lyrics out of the book? In any case, if you can get past the nagging sensation that you’ve heard this tune before (*ahem* Spooky by ARS), then you should be able to get a kick out of it.

Anthems for Authors – Tell Your Story Walking

Wow. With a haunting voice and poignant lyrics, Deb Talan’s song Tell Your Story Walking strikes a chord with any author. Supposedly, the song was inspired by Motherless Brooklyn, a novel by Jonathan Lethem, and she cleverly works part of the title in at the very beginning. Have a listen, and enjoy the slide show which was in turn inspired by the song. Great stuff.

Anthems for Authors – The Book I Read

When you’re writing a book, you need a lot of words. Pretty much, right? But songs don’t need a lot of words – and sometimes, it doesn’t take a lot of words to say how a book makes someone feel. Here, in The Book I Read by The Talking Heads, there aren’t a lot of lyrics – but any author can appreciate the ones that are there: “I’m writing ’bout the book I read / I have to sing about the Book I read / I’m embarrassed to admit it hit the soft spot in my heart / When I found out you wrote the / Book I read”  Have a listen … and smile.
