The 2014 Nightlight Readings Short Story Writers Contest is open to short stories up to 5000 words. Stories should appeal to at-risk boys in the 10-12 year age group who often stop reading for pleasure. This year’s theme is adventure.
Prizes: First, second, and third place winners will receive prizes of up to $1,000 award plus certificate and publication of the story. All award winners will be publicized nationally by Nightlight Reading.

The Southern California Genealogical Society sponsors its annual family-history writing contest to support and encourage the writing of family history, local history, and memoirs, both by genealogists and by the public at large.The contest is open to: Non-fiction articles that describe family or local history and capture a family experience or the character of a locality; or Non-fiction character sketches or memoirs that give a sense of an individual’s character and personality.
The 23rd Annual Austin Chronicle Short Story Contest is open to original and unpublished short stories of no more than 2500 words.
Blackbird, a journal published twice annually by New Virginia Review and the Creative Writing Department at Virginia Commonwealth University, is currently accepting submissions. They are looking for previously unpublished poetry, short fiction stories, and personal narratives. Writers can read past issues online to familiarize themselves with what the editors choose to publish.
