Rowdy and I are part of a wilderness search and rescue team. We’ve worked plane crashes and avalanche victim recovery. Sometimes all you find are bodies. Sometimes you find a toddler who wandered off from a campsite.

But it’s not all high drama. Every once in a while, you get a good laugh. I remember one case we worked where a pair of teenagers had run away from a remotely situated fat camp…

That kid in the picture is my little brother, Andy. In 1987, he got carried away by an undertow at this very beach. The authorities never recovered his body.

I took this picture of him yesterday, when he walked up out of the water as if nothing had happened.

They say the best memories don’t come from the vacations or family get-togethers where everything goes off without a hitch. I think there is something to that.

We had just gotten settled into our new home and decided to throw a barbecue to get to know our new neighbors.

It is safe to say it did not go as we had hoped, but it certainly was memorable. In the pantheon of our family stories, we refer to it as the barbecue of the damned.

Flash Fiction Challenge: The Ghosts of Northgate

Northgate Sanitarium was an extension of the state prison system. The facility specialized in  experimental treatment of the criminally insane. Some horrible stuff went on there.

Abandoned in the 1950s, the old building has been linked by rumor to a few recent disappearances.

I had just gotten my first job as a journalist, working for the Northgate Observer. I thought it would make a good story to spend the night in the old sanitarium. Back then, I guess you could have called me a skeptic…
