A divorce was out of the question. There was no way Tom was giving Heidi one red cent.

He promised her he’d stop cheating. He said he wanted to try again. He told her everything and anything he thought she wanted to hear just to get her to go on this “rediscovery” weekend with him up in the mountains.

His plan was to slip some ecstasy into her drinks, get her rip-roaring drunk, and then drown her in the hot tub. That way, it would look like an accident. He could keep all his hard-earned money and wouldn’t ever have to look back. Now, he just had to get her drinking…

Flash Fiction Challenge: Wonderfall

When he was little, Mark had come here with his father, a life-long fisherman. Mark had misunderstood the word “waterfall,” and called this place the wonderfall. Mark’s dad thought it was cute, and his nickname for this special fishing place stuck.

In the course of an otherwise long and difficult relationship, that was really the only inside joke he and his father shared. They loved each other, but they were very different sorts of men. Their interests diverged further as Mark grew older until they were estranged. It stayed that way until it was too late.

Mark now looked down at his own young son who seemed more than a little disappointed in the wonderfall. Perhaps this is how it starts. A tiny twinge of fear that he and his own son were too very different got him thinking…

Flash Fiction Challenge: Guides

When I came to, my car was in the ditch. Best I could remember, I swerved to miss a moose in the road. Luckily it wasn’t snowing – yet – but I was out in the middle of flipping nowhere. I checked the back seat: no food, no clothes, no luggage. Weirdest part of all was, I couldn’t remember where I had been headed.

I looked out the passenger-side window to see two large dogs peering in at me. They gazed at me like I should follow them, so I got out of the car and started staggering up the trail. From time to time they’d stop and wait for me. I hoped that there wouldn’t be far to go…

After trudging all night through dense forest behind enemy lines, we made it – at dawn – to the weapons depot.

Agent 98.6 and I had gone without sleep in hopes of reaching this rumored place before daylight. We were just supposed to confirm its existence – but that’s not good enough, as far as I’m concerned. I’m going in to render these rockets useless. It’s my duty.

There’s just one minor problem with this plan; I don’t know anything about bombs…
