The Baltimore Review seeks short fiction, creative nonfiction, or poetry for publication in their winter and summer issues. Guidelines vary by category.

Prizes:  Web exposure and a copy of the collection in which the author’s work appears.

Flash Fiction Challenge: An Inhospitable Shore

Maybe the ones who went down with the ship were the lucky ones. I drifted on flotsam for days, only to wash up here, on a small cactus-strewn island.

Even in my weakened condition, it didn’t take long to walk its breadth. There was no water. This is how I would die.

I collapsed onto the coarse warm sand and closed my eyes against the midday sun. I awoke to a sound coming from the scrubby growth…

In 250 words or less, write a story incorporating the elements in the picture and/or the written prompt above. Do not include the prompt in your entry. The 250 word limit will be strictly enforced.

columbus new providence bahamas 1984The punk grabbed the old lady’s purse and ran up those steps like a monkey on crack. A little crowd of tourists gathered around as the old woman yelled at me to do something.

I’m at least thirty years older and a good fifty pounds heavier than him. I don’t do foot chases any more.

Looking up at the steps, I just smile. “Oh don’t worry. He’ll be coming back this way in a moment.”

I know something he doesn’t know.
