I wasn’t there to watch the game, but that’s what I was doing. I was sidelined with an ankle injury that made me miss my first game in six straight seasons.

I don’t like to think of myself as the kind of guy who wants others to fail, but I found my stomach turning every time the rookie goalie replacing me made a save. He was good, and that was bad for me.

Some kids have guardian angels and some have fairy godmothers. I had Marvin, the magic marmot.

He was a bit of a crank, and never granted a wish without grumbling a good deal about it. I wouldn’t have minded so much except that he also often got it horribly wrong.

Flash Fiction Challenge: Matchmaker

Flash Fiction Challenge: Guiding Light

fort oswego lighthouse ny oct 2008Mr. Grogan had been the keeper at the lighthouse for thirty years before they cut off the funding.

They said we didn’t need the lighthouses anymore – said what with the GPS and the satellites and computers, lighthouses was a waste of money.

Old Grogan stayed. Kept his watch as always. It was a good thing, too. When the hurricane hit, all that fancy equipment failed. Only the beacon in the lighthouse worked. Funny thing is, it shouldn’t have worked at all…
