As the two men in filthy orange jumpsuits staggered over the crest, they beheld a tree teeming with large, black birds.

The short, pudgy one squinted and asked his companion, “What is it, Harvey? A bunch of owls or something?’

Harvey looked at him with an expression of tired disdain. “No, Lowell. They ain’t owls. Probably a dead cow or something there.”

A faint breeze carried the smell of rotting flesh toward them. Lowell shook his head back and forth rapidly, making his jowls wiggle. “This ain’t good.”

Harvey had already moved up to the top of the ridge. He could see a dozen bodies in various stages of decomposition beneath the tree. Each wore the tell-tale remnants of an orange jumpsuit. “No, Lowell. It ain’t good…

Walking through the tunnels made her skin crawl. She focused on the light at the other end and just kept moving.

The echoing sounds of her own steps made it seem as if she were being followed, but she knew that was not possible. Everyone else in the world was dead. There would be no oncoming cars, no marauding miscreants.

Still, from time-to-time, she thought she could hear something. Echoes – just echoes. She stopped and turned to confront her fear. From the blackness behind, the sound of footsteps continued…

Such a laconic and disinterested lifestyle just did not suit Kirby’s nature. He longed to be an explorer or perhaps a spy. One day, Kirby saw a group of people having a picnic on the ground below. He eagerly took it upon himself to discover what these creatures were up to… Continue reading “Flash Fiction Challenge: Kirby the Koala”
