Glimmer Train’s Short Story Award for New Writers

Glimmer Train is accepting submissions for their quarterly Short Story Award for New Writers. Open only to writers who have not been published in a print publication with a circulation over 5,000.

Prizes: First place, $1500 and publication. Second place, $500. Third place, $300.00.

Reading fee: $15 per submission. No more than three submissions.

Thomas Loud is an everyday person – he thinks he knows what is wrong with the world and how to fix it, but never does anything. He thinks he knows what is wrong with society and has a vague idea of who to blame, but leaves it all for tomorrow. He thinks he knows about a lot of things, but the truth is, he doesn’t.

But one day, that all changes when a very, very stupid idea gets Thomas thrown amidst a shadowy organization that doesn’t want to rule the world. Quite opposite, the organization wants to save it. And they will soon teach Thomas that sometimes good genes aren’t in good people.

Underground Voices Short Story Competition

Underground Voices is sponsoring a short story competition. Partial proceeds will go to Reading is Fundamental, a nonprofit program to get books and literacy resources to children in need. Submit two stories maximum, no more than twenty-five pages each.

Prizes:

First place: $700.00 and publication in the 2013 Underground Voices print anthology.

Second place: $300.00 and publication in the 2013 Underground Voices print anthology.

Third place: $100.00 and publication in the 2013 Underground Voices print anthology.

Entry Fee: $15 per entry

Gulf Coast’s Barthelme Prize for Short Prose

Gulf Coast journal is now accepting entries of prose poetry, flash fiction, and micro-essays for its Barthelme Prize for Short Prose. Contest judged by Robert Coover. Any theme, but maximum length is 500 words per entry. All entries will be considered for paid publication.
