One very important inexpensive marketing tool indie bloggers don’t talk about enough is the simultaneous publishing of both electronic and paperback versions of books – ebooks and pbooks.

A study by The Pew Center indicates that 19% of adults in this country now have tablet computers and 19% have dedicated ereaders. These numbers are up from about 5% in 2010. That’s remarkable.

But these statistics still mean that the bulk of the population doesn’t own technology designed to optimize the digital book reading experience. For this reason, indie writers should seriously consider making their next novel available as a paperback as well as an ebook. Such a move expands the reading market significantly. There are dozens of Print-On-Demand (POD) companies out there offering a variety of support services (to get started, check out one list here) to support indie writers who are so inclined. Department of Justice Decision Released

Dept. of Justice has determined that the proposed “final judgment” provides “an appropriate and effective remedy” for the antitrust violations. They are quoted as saying that the comments to dismiss the case were being submitted “by those who have an interest in seeing consumers pay more for e-books…”

The DoJ showed little interest in the comments from some of the big players in the industry, including Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million and the Authors Guild. They go further to say that arguments that Amazon will eventually monopolize the e-book industry as “highly speculative at best.”

The DoJ also noted that not all authors objected to the settlement. Apparently, many mainstream or traditionally published authors were against the settlement. The largest group in favor of the settlement was self-published authors. In one comment by a group of self-published authors, the traditional publishers and literary agents were described as “… all kinds of middlemen which have gone from being indispensable to optional … “ Continue reading “Department of Justice Decision Released”

Embrace the eFuture

Personally, I will always love the sensual experience: the smell and touch reading a printed book. I suppose that no matter how convenient or inexpensive eReading is when compared to the real thing, so to speak…given the choice, especially if I didn’t have to shell out the thirty or forty dollars, as opposed to three or four dollars, I might still reach for the paper book. However, young readers are reaching for eReaders by choice, and a lot of the oldies, like me – being gifted eReaders by younger family members – are converted by the convenience and the price. The trend is changing, and quite rapidly.

I have to admit that before I began my research into ePublishing a little over a year ago, I truly believed that the decline in hard copy books and bricks and mortar book shops was the death knell to the art of reading, particularly with the onslaught of text speak – a personal hate of mine. I envisaged a future where people didn’t read, couldn’t read, or write, or even speak properly, where they communicated in a kind of ‘pidgin text speak’. I discovered, however, the complete opposite and in fact the number of leisure readers is increasing, and mostly the increase is due to the eRevolution. Continue reading “Embrace the eFuture”
