NEW Exercise your Vote on the Writing Exercise!

With the poll software debacle behind us and final “personnel adjustments” made in the IU engineering department, we are now prepared to begin voting for this week’s Writing Exercise extravaganza. You may review the entries HERE.

Don’t worry, we have adjusted the power settings on the poll from kill to stun. I’m pretty sure we got that right anyway. It was a little hard to come by volunteers after that first unfortunate incident.

Voting will close at 5 pm mountain time on Thursday January 12, 2012. The recipient with the most votes wins a feature post and publication at year end.

IU Writing Contest – Timestream

You have recovered a buried memory. The scene to the right is the now and suddenly familiar image that springs to the forefront of your mind. What happened there? Was it a suppressed memory of unimaginable horror? Was it the scene of your first romance long ago? Try to remember what happened there…

In 250 words or less, tell me a story incorporating the elements in the picture.

Use the comment section below to submit your entry. Entries will be accepted until 5:00 PM Mountain Standard Time on Tuesday, January 10th, 2012.

On Wednesday morning, we will open voting to the public with an online poll for the best writing entry accompanying the photo. Voting will be open until 5:00 PM Thursday.

On Friday morning, the winner will be recognized as we post the winning entry along with the picture as a feature. Best of luck to you all in your writing!

And the Winner Is…

Today we’re pleased to announce the winner of the first weekly “Writing Exercise with a Twist” here at Indies Unlimited.  The winning entry is rewarded with a special feature here today (a prize so valuable, it cannot even be calculated in terms of dollars and cents – really), and a place in our collection of winners which will be published as an e-book at year end.  Seventeen entrants received a total of 75 votes, and with nearly 25% of those, the winner is:  Contestant #16 –  Sally Whitney, for her entry, An Inconvenient Journey.

Thank you to everyone who participated – what a great number of excellent entries!  Now, without further ado, (drum-roll) here’s the winning entry by Sally Whitney:

The coming new year is like an unexplored alien landscape. We stand now looking at this vision of a new place that promises adventure. This wonderful landscape photo by K.S. Brooks depicts a beautiful but forbidding world.

Is this scene from long ago, from a distant future, from here, from a distant planet? In 250 words or less, tell me a story about the exploration or quest you and/or your party must undertake across this frozen plain.

Use the comment section below to submit your entry. Entries will be accepted until 5:00 PM Mountain Standard Time on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012.

On Wednesday morning, we will open voting to the public with an online poll for the best writing entry accompanying the photo. Voting will be open until 5:00 PM Thursday.
