Call for Entries: The 35th Nimrod Literary Awards

The Nimrod International Journal of Prose and Poetry seeks previously unpublished fiction and poetry entries for the 35th Nimrod Literary Awards, which include The Katherine Anne Porter Prize for Fiction and The Pablo Neruda Prize for Poetry.

Prizes: First prize, $2000 and publication; second prize, $1000 and publication.

Reading fee: $20.00 per story.

Flash Fiction Challenge: Greener Pastures

Henrietta the Hereford was not a contented cow. Gertrude and Mildred and the others could stand around all day chewing their cuds and gossiping about the same old things. Henrietta wanted more.

She wondered things, thought about things. She was an aspiring cow philosopher of sorts.

Right now, she’s wondering why that grass on the other side of the fence looks so much greener.

In 250 words or less, tell us a story incorporating the elements in the picture. The 250 word limit will be strictly enforced.

Please keep language and subject matter to a PG-13 level.

Aw, who doesn’t love elephants? You KNOW you want to write about them. Especially for a writing contest. Phyl’s Books is looking for fiction and narrative nonfiction between 500 and 5000 words for their upcoming Elephanthology.

Prizes: First prize, $150 and publication; second prize, $50. Top ten tales may be selected for the anthology.

It wasn’t the hurricane: at least not directly. Maybe the storm winds had carried the virus from its point of origin.

By now, everyone knew about the zombie apocalypse. The human zombies had turned out not to be the worst problem.

Nobody had thought about the dead trees—or the undead trees as they were now known.

One of those damn trees got his dog. That was it for Mike. He eyed the sign one last time, fired up his chainsaw and stepped off the path…
