Flash Fiction Challenge: Friend or Foe

Being a guardian isn’t easy. My people are remarkably unaware. I honestly don’t know how they ever got along without me. I rarely see them sniff anything—not even each other.

And here is another situation. There comes a stranger and what do my people do? They make goo-goo sounds at it. Really? That is the first impression you want to make?

Cats are notoriously psychotic. There is no telling what this character is up to. I guess I’ll have to check this out myself.

Glimmer Train Fiction Open Contest

Glimmer Train’s quarterly “Fiction Open” is open to all subjects, all themes, and all writers. Most entries run from 2,000 to 8,000 words, although stories from 2,000 to 20,000 words are welcome.

Prizes:

$2,500 for first place (plus publication in Glimmer Train Stories),  $1,000 for second place, $600 for third place.

Reading fee is $19 per story. Please no more than three submissions per contest.

Flash Fiction Challenge: Last Meal

They had given him what they called his last meal, but it wasn’t really. It was just food. Meals are for free men.

As they strap him down onto the table, Danny remembers his last meal. He had it in a little roadside diner right before all the trouble started—right before the end began.

That was a long time ago now. Twelve years of trials and appeals. Too long. He was ready for it to be over now.  It will be over in a minute or two. They are prepping the injection site now and Danny is thinking about that hamburger. Someone says something to him, they ask about regrets. He thinks about that for a moment.
