Must have made a wrong turn at that last interjection…

When I learned to drive as a teen (yes, they had cars back then, shut up), one of the more puzzling statements in my DMV-supplied manual was: “Passing is a cooperative venture.” This didn’t make sense until I was in a situation where a guy in front of me kept speeding up to avoid my attempts to pass him. I don’t know what his problem was, maybe a little too much testosterone in the bloodstream, but that’s when I realized that the act of passing is a team sport. The Fiction Desk Flash Fiction Competition 2014

Now in its second year, the Fiction Desk Flash Fiction Competition is open for stories from 250-1,000 words.

Prizes: First prize, £200 plus publication in an upcoming Fiction Desk Anthology; Runner-up (4), £50 plus publication.

Entry fee: £3 for one story/ £7.50 to submit three stories together.

Not One Stinkin’ Dime

I decided to try an experiment. What would happen, I wondered, if I set-up a crowdfunding appeal on either Kickstarter or Indiegogo? I had written a post, Kickstart Your Indie Projecton Indies Unlimited in favor of Kickstarter, and my fellow IU writer Rich Meyer had written one, Mendicancy – The First Refuge of The Modern Indie, critiquing the idea of independent authors asking for money to fund their book costs. What better way to prove my point that people are happy to fund novels, and to gain visibility for my book at the same time, than to put together a crowdfunding campaign? Dark Tales Quarterly Short Story Contest

It’s baaaaack… Dark Tales is relaunching its short story competition. The quarterly magazine is seeking unpublished horror and science fiction stories up to 5000 words.

Prizes: First prize, £250 plus publication; Runner-up, £50 plus publication; Third place, £25 plus publication.
