Follow up to E-mail Marketing (Or, don’t get your panties in a bunch)

I never knew that e-mail marketing would create such a stir! A couple of weeks ago, I posted an article on e-mail marketing as a part of your overall process to get noticed. You can read about the role of e-mail marketing here.

The comments on this site were all pretty generic and supportive of the process. However, I saw some related posts on other blogs and the basic outcry was, “I would NEVER do that!”

Tutorial: Facebook Documents

I have to admit, when I first joined groups in Facebook, I had no idea what a Facebook document was, how to use it, or how to add my information to it. In fact, I still sort of dislike them (although I couldn’t tell you why) even though they are extremely useful.

Groups use Facebook documents to share information – like the Twitter handles, web sites, blogs, genres, and other kinds of data about their members. Some writers/reviewers groups use them to list books to be read or reviewed, and available reviewers and what genres they prefer.

One thing that may be confusing to some is that Facebook changed the nomenclature from “Documents” to “Files.” If you want to find the ones in your group, scroll up to the top of the page, to the right, and click “Files.” (see above, left) Continue reading “Tutorial: Facebook Documents”

Big Changes to Facebook Cover Photos (but it’s a secret)

Facebook LogoBig news for cover photos on Facebook. As you may know, Facebook has very strict guidelines when it comes to what you can say, what you can do, and how you “advertise” on your Facebook Page. Of course, the reason was, Facebook wants you to advertise through Facebook ads!

However, very quietly, Facebook has dropped some of its restrictions; most importantly, it doesn’t disallow Call-to-Actions. Hold on, before you grammar police get all handcuffing on me, the previous sentence was meant as a double negative. You see, Facebook didn’t come out and say, “You can now do this.” They actually just dropped the language that says you can’t. Real-time Promotions

indie-author-go-kart-658444_960_720Being an indie author has its perks. One of our advantages over the big guys is that we can react faster to changing circumstances. You could say that while they’re driving Humvees, we’re driving Mini-Coopers; while they’re piloting a hulking Armageddon machine, we’ve got go-kart handling.

Nowhere is this clearer than in the case of current events. Big publishers who want to take advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime event have to start planning a couple of years ahead of time. And they’re lousy at reacting quickly to the big news of the day. Think about 9/11: we didn’t start seeing books about it on store shelves until years after the fact. That’s because publishers first had to find somebody with a manuscript, and then they had to go through all the usual gymnastics required for getting a book into print.
