Building a Multi-Layer Table of Contents in MS Word

I needed to put a Table of Contents (TOC) into an existing Word document for my latest book, which is a collection of flash fiction (2013 Flash Fiction Anthology). My plan was to publish on Amazon in eBook format containing a TOC with hyperlinks to each story prompt and actual story.

However, I had a problem building the TOC. Then I used ‘help’ feature in Word without any success. Finally, I referred to some articles on the subject and still wasn’t successful. I finally worked through it, and thought others might be able to benefit from a post on my approach.

I’m sure those familiar with building a TOC will get a chuckle out of this post, but my approach does work. Continue reading “Building a Multi-Layer Table of Contents in MS Word”

Sneak Peek: Under Low Skies

Today we have a sneak peek from the mystery by Ed Teja: Under Low Skies.

Martin Billings is in Venezuela to prove that his brother, Tim, didn’t murder a fisherman. He is a freighter Captain, not an investigator. A mysterious and gorgeous woman lawyer is trying to get him to leave the country without stirring things up, but she won’t say why.

When someone brutally murders Tim’s girlfriend, the police have reason to suspect Martin. Even worse, a local crime boss and a vicious gringo called Highball have decided that Martin knows where a missing drug shipment is hidden. It’s a good thing Ugly Bill is on his way to help.

Under Low Skies is available from Amazon, Smashwords, Amazon UK, and most online retailers.

Flash Fiction Challenge: The Last Review

Every December, for the last twenty years, I have had to drive up to the central office to get my performance review from old Mr. Detweiler.

I only half-listen. My attention is on the poster behind his head. I love that beach. I can see myself walking along, the sand warm on my bare feet.

I must have stopped nodding at the right times. Detweiler slams his fist down on his desk. Now he’s talking to me about my lack of focus. He says he expects more from an employee who has been with the company for such a long time. he says I am lucky to have this job. Times are hard.

I have been with the company for a long time. Maybe too long. I may be the only employee left who knows about the safe behind the poster. That safe is where Detweiler keeps the money he skims from the company.

That beach looks pretty good…
