Wow, it’s great to be back. I want to apologize for the last couple of weeks. My blog posts may not have been up to their usual caliber (which is not saying much to begin with).
However, I am back in action now. Although, to give you full disclosure, you may not like my post today either!
I just returned from Las Vegas. Yeah, that place. Not enough sleep and too much drinky. I wasn’t there for fun, though. Actually, I was there to conduct a workshop for the HFMA (Healthcare Financial Management Association) at their annual meeting. Here’s the thing, it was a big deal and all, an actual paid speaking gig. But, you know what? I spent the entire time talking about writing and publishing.
Not during my actual workshop, where I had to talk about all the boring things in healthcare finance. Outside of that, the topic was books. Here’s what I learned:
1. Everyone wants to write a book.
2. Very few people do.
This brings me back to this great group of people here at Indies Unlimited. We actually write books! We don’t just talk about it. Yep, as much as we think there are way too many authors, the reality is, most people won’t and don’t go through with it.
And one more thing I learned:
3. I really get passionate when I talk about writing and publishing.
Yeah, if there was any doubt before about what I want to be doing every day, there isn’t any more. In the four days I was there, I probably talked about HFMA stuff for about 10% of the time. When you get outside of our indie publishing world, you find that people really are impressed that you published and have no clue about how to go about doing it.
Guys, we really have something special in this arena. I encourage you to get out and away from our writing groups and writing conferences and go talk to lots of people who have nothing to do with writing. It’s a real gas and you’ll want to come back and write faster than you’ve ever written before.
One last thing about my recent reneging on my blog posting duties …
Our four-year-old Gavin became a big brother. Three weeks ago our beautiful baby girl was born.
Jovie Taylor Devitt, a healthy, bubbly girl. I just had to tell you. After all, you guys are like family to me.

Jovie is absolutely beautiful Thank you for sharing her with us. Welcome Jovie.
Thanks Yvonne, you guys are great.
Congrats!
I love how you talk about writing for 90% or more of this post and by the end, we're all like "aw, cute baby".
David, that's because cute babies are more important than writing. Thanks for the congrats.
Sincere congratulations to you and your family, Jim!
What a beautiful baby girl.
Thanks Marcia, I appreciate it.
Congratulations Jim!
One of the great things about being a writer is that your words live on and someday your children and grandchildren will delight in them.
Oh wow – she is gorgeous! Congratulations Jim!
Beautiful baby, Jim. Congratulations!
Oh BTW – great post. 😉
Congrats, Jim! Like the greeting card goes, "wishing you joy and wonder and some sleep."
And good points about talking to non-writers about writing. 🙂
Congrats on baby Jovie!
Well-said. You feel like family to me too, JD.
Congrats on the lovely baby. Blessings.
Huge congratulations on your adorable baby Jovie….sorry,I seem to have forgotten what the post was about…got a little distracted there.
Congratulations on the birth of beautiful baby Jovie!
And you are quite right. Outside the writer world, Internet or physical, we are exotic creatures.
Fun post!
Congrats on the new baby girl! Last night at dinner with a bunch a folks, writing came up and yes, three out of four people had a book idea but I was the only one who actually did it. This does motivate me to keep writing.
Sincerest congrats on your new arrival, Jim. I'm sure you'll find writing fiction a whole lot easier with two darlings in the house instead of one!
😉
Aww, what a cutie! Nice post… 😀
Congrats on the little one! She's beautiful!
Jimmie! Glad that little one looks like her momma! Damn happy for you, Meli and the Gavinator!
