We were very pleased to learn that Indies Unlimited has been listed as recommended by Preditors & Editors (P&E) in the site’s Promotional and Marketing Services section.
For those few who may not yet know, Preditors & Editors is a valuable resource for writers, representing something along the lines of a Consumer Reports for the publishing world. Before you shop your manuscript, it pays to check with sites such as P&E. If nothing else, check them out before you ink any deals with anyone.
On a personal note, I will relate that P&E helped keep me from making what could have been a costly mistake. When I first finished my novel, I shopped it to every agent I could find. The only two who responded with interest were listed in P&E as NOT RECOMMENDED.
Both these “agents” saw a lot of promise in my manuscript if only I was willing to invest a little money in editing, formatting, marketing, cover design, publicity, carpet cleaning, etc., and fortunately, they happen to provide exactly such services.
Seeing those agents listed in P&E as NOT RECOMMENDED assisted me in making the decision not to accept their “offers.” Now, to be fair, I am also shielded from such foolishness by a protective ring of poverty. A lot of people do fall into the clutches of these unscrupulous predators though. Thanks to the work of the folks who run P&E, indie writers have a very useful tool. The community as a whole owes P&E a debt of gratitude.
When I learned that Indies Unlimited was listed on P&E, I clicked over and was saddened to see they are being sued and are asking for donations to build their legal defense fund. I encourage everyone who can do so to donate a few dollars to protect this vital resource and to support Preditors & Editors in their mission to make good information available to our vulnerable community. Here is the link to their home page:
You’ll find the PayPal button to donate to their legal defense fund right there on the page. If you can’t donate, you can still help by spreading the word. Post it, tweet it, shout it from the mountains, send out your messenger owls, do whatever you can to make sure the world knows someone is trying to silence a champion of truth. Thanks.
Totally agree, Stephen. I’ve utilized them over and over again, and always found their recommendations to be spot on. I’ll send them a few shackels and spread the word.
I wish I had known about them before I was ripped off by iUniverse. I’ve sent them a small donation. Don’t have much to give.
Yvonne, you are not the only victim of iUniverse…
At least it wasn’t a total loss. I did learn a lot there.
Wow. I didn’t know that. I’ve used them as a resource, too. Heading over…
Had no idea about the lawsuit. Going now…
I first heard of P&E through SFWA and have used their valuable intel often. I will do what I can.
P&E is definitely a resource we writers need. I have used it as well, and I don’t know why they are being sued? Dollars to doughnuts, it is probably by one or more of those NOT RECOMMENDED. It is a shame, I’ll hop on over and do what I can….
Made a small donations also, some is better than none. Will tweet it and put it on facebook too. Years ago they had information about the Ivery/Press-tige scam, which was local to me. It’s through their efforts that writers and those in the publishing business can be alerted about possible scams, etc.
I’ll certainly do what I can; they have been invaluable over the years.
Thanks. I wish i’d have known. Spent a small fortune on the first book through Authorhouse and then found out I could do the exact same stuff with even more control for free ( or nominal) at Createspace and KDP. I will be checking out P&E.
