I’ve decided to give my unruly pupils a little rest from lessons. Well, their attention spans aren’t great, and since another British-hosted Olympics probably won’t happen again in my lifetime and I’m somewhat obsessed, I’m going to do another round-up of books by members of the illustrious IU team.
This time, I’m featuring books by Yvonne Hertzberger, Chris James, and Carol Wyer, each uniquely different from the other and great reads.
The Second Internet Café – Part 1 The Dimension Researcher by Chris James is a complex but intelligent and thoroughly enjoyable sci-fi. A dimension researcher is, essentially, a time-traveller and is the best job in the world. It’s an important one when you have to gather information and knowledge from innumerable dimensions. Not only that, when your job, and those of your colleagues, is on the line and you’ve got a dimension ‘stalker’ to contend with, things can get quite complicated. This is an excellent, very well-written novel.

Surfing in Stilettos by Carol Wyer couldn’t be more different: a humorous, very entertaining story of 50-plus wanderlust that comes to an abrupt stop in France. The main character’s adventures and thoughts are portrayed in a blog, which has a loyal following of similar-aged devotees and the ‘posts’ are peppered throughout the novel. It’s light-hearted, easy to read, tremendously good fun, and a novel you’ll enjoy from the word ‘go’.

Back to sci-fi/fantasy, is Back from Chaos by Yvonne Hertzberger. This was a novel that firmly put the genre on my map having hovered over it for a while. It’s a novel that has everything in it from romance and tragedy to war and treachery. A kingdom is overthrown by its neighbour, but subsequently united by the marriage of the surviving issue of the rulers. Needless to say, there are those who are not at all happy about the situation, and the dissenters have to be outed and dealt with. Yvonne is a very expressive writer without being over-elaborate and draws her characters with care and clarity. There’s no doubt you’ll be avidly seeking out the sequel.

Come on the home team! Whoo-hoo-hoo
I enjoyed reading Sylvia Massara’s five star review of Surfing in Stilettos (posted on Goodreads.) I could really use some humor right now. Will have Carol Wyer’s book delivered to my Kindle this morning. 😉
Great. *More* books to read to the virtual pile. 😉
And I’ve just spotted the deliberate error…the Olympics are now over. Oopsy daisy. They were on when I wrote this…
Great recommendations! Always enjoy your posts, Cathy!
