Throughout Indies Unlimited, you will find a wealth of information on everything you need for a successful writing career. As we build our platforms through “like” campaigns and connecting with our readers in about every way imaginable, sometimes it just feels like we get lost in the masses.
Most of us had figgered it to be a suicide mission. Thirty-odd mounted and sixty or so infantry against that Union fort.
We made our camp just a mile or so away, over a hilltop.
The plan was to attack at daybreak, but somewhere in the night, it looked like daybreak got the jump on us. The sky lit up something amazing and the air filled with a buzzing like a million bees. By the time we run up to the hilltop, there wasn’t nothing to see. That Union fort was still there, though its front gates was swung wide open. There wasn’t a sound to be heard, no men walking the wall.
Me and Jimmy walked down there a ways. There wasn’t no one there. I waved the captain over and we went down for a look-see. There was nary a soul to be found. Not one living thing. Every man, horse and dog was just gone. From what all we could tell, there hadn’t been a shot fired neither.
It sent a chill down my spine and old Jasper said it was ghosts done it. Then we heard that buzzing again. We all reckoned we’d find out soon enough.

Man, I was so sure I was going to win. I was so close to the semifinal circle in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards that I could taste it. My Tarot cards even said good news was coming! What could possibly go wrong?
Well, Seizedcould fail to be a semifinalist. That’s what could go wrong. And did, this past Tuesday.
If you’ve been playing this game of life for long enough, you’ve entered some contest or another, and unless you’re an extraordinary individual (and if so, I’d like to stand very close to you so the magic rubs off), you’ve lost at least once. So you know what it’s like: the sinking feeling in your gut; the denial; the rage; the desire to put the whole episode into your next novel and savage all those rotten writers whose books made the cut, because God knows nobody’s – NOBODY’S – was better than yours!
Ed Drury continues his winning streak as he is picked one again as the readers’ choice in this week’s Indies Unlimited Flash Fiction Challenge.
The winning entry is rewarded with a special feature here today and a place in our collection of winners which will be published as an e-book at year end.
